Introduction

That guy there is me, Algis Kuliukas at the age of 45.
I've lived here in sunny Perth, WA since 2003 and trade under the name "The SQL Server 'Guru'". (It seemed like a good idea at the time.)
Before then, whilst working in the UK
I went by the name 'Customised Training Solutions' which was equally pretentious but rather vague. The name implied that I could put
together any training course on anything, when the reality was all I knew was databases,
and really only two of those to any degree (Microsoft Access and SQL Server.) So
'down under' I
wanted to chose a name that better reflected my specialisation in databases, notably
Microsoft SQL Server. I'm not claiming to be a real
guru on the product
(please note the inverted commas!) but I have been working with the product
since it came out in 1988, when I joined Ashton Tate
(makers of dBase) specifically as their trainer/consultant
for 'advanced products' and have given over 500 courses and trained almost
3,000 people on it. I was therefore, technically, the first trainer of the PC version
of SQL Server (as opposed to the UNIX/VMS version sold by Sybase) in the UK. I also
did give many of Microsoft UK's early internal and external courses, as well as
many of their associated ATECs. So I do know the product quite well. Anyway, it's
only a name, so who cares? My favourite product, in any case, in good ol' Microsoft
Access which I suppose I will continue to defend against real database gurus until
I die.
